Docker for Data Science Meetup
For this module, I decided to attend the women in Data Science meetups: The networking Happy Hour and the Docker for Data Science session.
I had first met Randi at a 1x1 at Dell and I was instantly awed by her humility and her ideas. She was very friendly and welcoming. So meeting her again was definitely a highlight of the meetup. I also got the opportunity to meet so many amazing women that day. They all belonged to different organizations and the topics were everything from using R vs Python to best places to work to even what lipstick shades suited every skin tones! I had a great time. The only thing I did not like though was the cafe setting. It invariably made people break out into groups, and then small subgroups would form. I think that was the whole idea behind a networking happy hour. Although it is a lot easier when you are not sitting down on a large table. If at the networking everyone is standing, it is easier to move around. But when everyone's sitting down, you are stuck with your neighbours. And since time is limited, you cannot effectively network with everyone. I remember, at a point, Randi literally had to skip over a few people to get to a more central position on the table so she could talk to everyone. Also, it got very loud!
The Docker for Data Science was a much different experience. This event was organized by HomeAway and thus was even held at their office. I always wanted to visit their office so I was super excited about it. This more of a seminar styled meetup where they had a designated speaker who was ready with a really engaging slide deck and we were asked to come with laptops with Docker installed. I really liked this meetup because the things I learnt in those few hours, otherwise would've definitely taken a whole lot longer on my own. I learnt about deploying models in containers and what are some of the scenarios where you would use this setting. It a really good learning experience! I am definitely looking forward to the next session in this series.
